50cc moped hire is a great way to explore, get to work or even make money as a delivery driver. But understanding the laws and what you need to do to stay legal can be very daunting.

Can you ride a 50cc without a licence?

The good news is that you can rent a 50cc moped and legally ride it in the UK if you have a UK driving licence and passed your driving test before February 1st 2001. 

If, however, you passed your UK driving test after February 1st 2001, and you want to rent a 50cc moped, you need to complete a CBT Certificate. CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training and is a day course which typically runs between 9-5 pm and teaches you how to ride a scooter.

Can you ride a 50cc scooter on an A road?

You can ride a 50cc scooter on an A Road in the UK however it is worth giving consideration to whether it is safe to do so. That is because a 50cc moped is restricted to 30mph which for safety reason may be dangerous on an A road where the traffic is going quicker. That is because you are not able to keep up with the flow of traffic as easily.

Can you ride a 50cc scooter on a motorway?

No, you cannot ride a 50cc moped on the motorway for safety reasons.

Do you need a CBT test to ride a 50cc moped?

If you,

• Passed your driving test before February 1st 2001, you do not need a CBT certificate.

• Passed your driving test after February 1st 2001, you will require a CBT certificate to rent a moped.

Do you need L plates on 50cc moped?

If you passed your driving test before February 1st 2001, you can ride or hire a 50cc moped and will not need to display L Plates. However, all our scooters that we hire have L Plates on as standard. 

If you passed your driving test after February 1st 2001, once you complete your CBT certificate, you can then ride a 50cc moped without L Plates.

What happens if you get caught riding a 50cc moped without a CBT?

If you are caught riding a 50cc moped without a CBT certifcate you can be fined up to £1000 and get up to 6 points on your licence.

Can I use a 50cc moped for food delivery?

Yes, it is possible to use a 50cc moped for food delivery work, especially if you live in a large city with lots of traffic. A 50cc moped is great because it will save you money on fuel and costs considerably less to run.
