50cc moped hire is a great way to explore, get to work or even make money as a delivery driver. But understanding the laws and what you need to do to stay legal can be very daunting.

The good news is that you can rent a 50cc moped and legally ride it in the UK if you have a UK driving licence and passed your driving test before February 1st 2001.
If, however, you passed your UK driving test after February 1st 2001, and you want to rent a 50cc moped, you need to complete a CBT Certificate. CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training and is a day course which typically runs between 9-5 pm and teaches you how to ride a scooter.

You can ride a 50cc scooter on an A Road in the UK however it is worth giving consideration to whether it is safe to do so. That is because a 50cc moped is restricted to 30mph which for safety reason may be dangerous on an A road where the traffic is going quicker. That is because you are not able to keep up with the flow of traffic as easily.

Passed your driving test after February 1st 2001, you will require a CBT certificate to rent a moped.
If you passed your driving test before February 1st 2001, you can ride or hire a 50cc moped and will not need to display L Plates. However, all our scooters that we hire have L Plates on as standard.
If you passed your driving test after February 1st 2001, once you complete your CBT certificate, you can then ride a 50cc moped without L Plates.

If you are caught riding a 50cc moped without a CBT certifcate you can be fined up to £1000 and get up to 6 points on your licence.
